So in the previous post, I wrote why I was jumping ship from the iphone.
I admit, the iphone is one the best phones that has ever been created. I’ve had an iphone since generation 1 and I loved it. It has it’s pluses but as geek, it’s limiting in flexibility.
The Android phone os by google has the edge when comes to flexibility. Android is a match made in heaven for software hackers. They can pretty much create any type of software they want, install whatever os they want, install any app they want, the list goes on. It’s an OPEN PLATFORM. Something Apple doesn’t like to do all that much with the iphone.
Here are just a few reasons why I like the Android better:
1. Android is an open platform. I can go download the source code right now off the website and make it my own by editing however I please.
2. I can install apps manually through my computer and sd card. I don’t have to use an app store that filters what I can and cannot download.
3. I can root my phone (hack and enable hidden features) and tether the phone, install modified versions of it’s os, download themes and so much more. Right now I’m using the Cyanogen mod, and it’s blazing faster than the stock Android. This is cool. Iphones, your stuck! you’re stuck to using Apples made phone os, and have to wait for features.
4. Android custom mods have the latest and greatest features Google is building for Android. Their updated almost daily.
5. Voice dial. Need I say more? Where is that Apple? This should be a standard in accessibility!!!
6. Multi-tasking. On the Android you can run multiple programs in the background, while iphone can run only ONE at a time.
7. Don’t like a feature on the phone such as the keyboard or phonebook? download a new one. You can replace a built in feature with a better one if you want. Iphone, they will veto any app that mimics any app that’s pre-built for the phone.
Ok, I tooted Androids horn. So what are the down falls of Android phones?
1. App store is not as nice and plentiful as apple app store.
2. Touch response is not as good as iphones. Iphones touch screen is phenomenally responsive.
3. Lacks multi-touch features iphone has. But with cyanogen’s mod, you can have it all.
4. No audible book compatibility. WTF? that sucks.
5. Memory? Android skimped out on the built in memory. But you can always buy an sd card and get way more. But I like built in memory.
6. Still no flash. Iphone doesn’t have flash either. I want to watch hulu on my phone damn it.
After 2 years of using an iphone (1st gen and 2nd gen), I’m happy say that I’ve left the iphone bandwagon. I’ve long adored the awesome phone created by Apple whom I love dearly. But after 2 years of the closed platform that Apple is running with their phones and app store, I’ve jumped ship for a more open platform, Android. So here is why I left the iPhone:
Apple is a big company. They are focused on making money. But to keep making money, they like to keep things closed. And especially with their iTunes and iPods. I think this is smart on their part but sucks for the end user. I want to be able to install whatever program I want on my phone and not be controlled by someone above me. It’s like having a nagging parent always hovering over you telling you what you can do and can’t. It sucks, and they need to stop. We as consumers should have the right to do whatever we please!
Android platform by google is going in the right direction. They give power to the user to take and run with what they created. It’s definitely not as polished as the iPhone or iTunes, but it’s getting there. Android phones will be a force to be noticed in due time.
Apple is slow to really making a good product even better. They do slow incremental updates on all their products. This is a business model to make more money, but I think it sucks to consumers. I want substantial updates when they only release a new model once or twice a year. I don’t care about no stupid compass, or any minor updates. I want better features, a better browser, a better mail app, etc.
Voice dial? WTF? where is it iPhone? This should be a STANDARD IN ALL PHONES for accessibility reasons. I know that the new 3G S iphones have it but that is so stupid I can’t even speak…
So there are my gripes and why I left the iphone. But I have my handful of gripes about the Android phones already. Custom Android ROMS here I come.
Well looks like Microsoft may have finally done something right. The video below shows off the new HD Zune player. The user interface (UI) looks amazingly smooth. The fluid flow the UI is outstanding. Something the iphone has just been lagging on. I’m sure the new iphone 3gs speeds up the process but the Zune HD looks amazingly smooth. Like butter! I’m hate to admit, but Microsoft, looks like you did a great job on this one.
So what is a tiffin? Here is the wikipedia definition:
Tiffin carriers or dabbas are a kind of lunch box used widely in India for tiffin meals. They were also used in Singapore and Malaysia during the 1950s-60s. Normally they come in two to three-tiers. Tiffin carriers are opened by unlocking a small catch on either side of the handle, then removing it. In the Indian city of Mumbai there is a complex low-tech (but astonishingly efficient) system of delivering dabbas to city office-workers from their suburban homes by delivery teams known as dabbawallahs.
So the latest craze is going green. I’m all for it. C and I have been on this kick ever since coming back from Seattle and seeing the Kims being super green, we were inspired to pitch in and do our part in saving mother earth. Well more like, slowing down the process of killing mother earth =). So after we saw the Oprah show, which C made me watch, showcasing the super awesome tiffin case, we immediately wanted one. It would go great with our earth friendly, re-usable cloth grocery bags which I also use as my lunch bag. I went online and searched on Amazon and read reviews saying that the one on Amazon was no good!!! Saying that it was poorly built. So I soon found om-goods.com on one of my blogs I read talking about this very tiffin case.
I ordered the tiffin carrier and it was in my hands within a week. I ordered the 4 tier tiffin carrier ($20) which has a 4 bowls and 3 dishes that separate each bowl from each other. The plate between each bowl is ingenious. It’s there to protect the bottom part of the bowl, which would be on top when stacked, from getting wet or gunk on from whatever was below it. AND you can use the dishes as small plates!
So I’m at work, showing off my new tiffin carrier, being green and trendy, than than one of the clasps rod that was holding it in place had come loose! I was mad. I felt like my world was coming to an end cause I just spent $20 on this carrier and another $10 for shipping. So I emailed om-goods.com saying what the problem was and I’d be thankful if they can help me out some how. They responded immediately within that day, with an email saying they’d replace my carrier for free! and it was being shipped right a way. I was blown away by the great customer service, and the fast response. That kind of service is hard to come by, except for Apple. So now i have 2 – 4 tier tiffin carriers, so I’m pretty happy. Woot!
I love my tiffin, and I love om-goods.com. So everyone, go there and order one, these things are amazing. Super useful. Steel is better than plastic ware since it doesn’t stain, retain smell when you put stinky stuff in it like kim chi, and it’s easier to clean. They’ve also go 2, 3, and 4 tier tiffins.
Here are a few things I would do to totally mod this thing.
Add a plastic bowl as one level for microwaving things. I find that it sucks to not be able to just pop the thing in the microwave.
Add a Velcro strap or slot on top or side for your forks and spoons. That would be nice to just have everything all together.
Sell a caring case WITH freezer packs built into the case. That’d be awesome to keep things cool inside. Maybe even make it so that it keeps warmth inside so you can go both ways.
So I bought the Roku box no too long ago if you read below. I think it’s awesome little box but not enough titles!!! Dear Netflix, release more titles or I quit! Also when I seem to have to restart the Roku box everyday. It just hangs on “Connecting to Network” and I have restart the Roku box. Quality is pretty amazing even though it’s streaming but if your internet connection is slow, it’ll spit out some pretty crappy youtube quality. Other than that, I love you Roku box.
The Netflix Player makes it easy to instantly watch movies and TV episodes over the Internet on your living room TV, or anywhere you have a TV and an Internet connection. Compact and lightweight, inexpensive but powerful, simple to set up and use (it’s the perfect answer for people who just can’t get enough Netflix).
So basically I just ordered mine after a few days of contemplating. So basically if you buy this box for a $100 and you have a netflix account that’s at least the $8.99 a month, you can view all the movies through this box on your tv. Movies, tv shows, documentary’s, and more. Anything you find on the Netflix library, you can watch instantly on this Roku box streaming. It displays in HD, but I hear it’s still sub dvd quality. For about $120 a year to watch any dvd I’d like instantly, I call that a deal. Plus you get the 1 free mail in dvd deal with netflix.
These past couple days have been the roughest I’ve had in awhile. Everyday that I get up sigh that I have to continue with my life. It sounds more depressing than what it really is.
I’m in class right now. Class hasn’t started.
I started reading “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, recommended by C. It’s about a 24 year old guy name Alex. After graduating grad school, he decided to go find him self. He treks into the wild with little money he had, gave away all his possession, and carried on backpack filled with a camera, 10lbs of rice, and a few books. He ultimately dies (I’m not giving away the ending) but it’s an incredible story so far.
As I’m reading this book I feel so selfish. In the story Alex is so thankful that he’s alive, and I’m here complaining about my life. I recommend this book to everyone, so far.
Hello world.
Here’s my summary of the world today.
Al Gore, your documentary film “An Inconvenient Truth” sucks! It’s so damn boring. I get your point about how bad pollution is and how we should all be “green”. But can you please shut the F up. The least you could’ve done was add some cartoons or some visually stimulating images. All I hear is your voice the whole time. Since your voice sucks why not hire Morgan Freeman. Everyone loves his voice no?
There is no scientific proof that the pollution/green house gases are causing the warming of the earth. There’s proof that the earth does go through a cycle of cooling and warming. But who’s to say your wrong and I’m right and vice-versa.
James Kim missing found dead, and now the climbers on the mountain lost and one found dead. When you see on the news on how much effort and man power goes into finding one man, it really shows you how we value our life. Prayers to them.
New movie by Jim Carrey. Looks awesome! Check out the trailer here.

His obsession with the number 23 starts to consume him, and he begins to realize the book forecasts far graver consequences for his life than he could have ever imagined.
