Apple announcements are today and the rumor mills have been churning non-stop. Here are my predictions/thoughts.
1. Apple will announce a new apple tv called iTV that connects to the iTunes for movies music and most importantly app store. That means there would be netflix, hulu, and abc apps to watch your tv shows and movies. And I bet you’ll be able to start tweeting right from your tv and more. Please no stupid foursquare app where you check in from your tv.
I also see a big potential market for games. I think this will be apples way to break into the whole console gaming to compete against xbox, playstation and nintendo. People would use iPhones as controllers. It would be the most high tech controller there is with gyroscope and retina display. Imagine playing poker with friends and your iPhone becomes your cards you play. Or imagine playing a racing car game and your iPhone becomes the steering wheel. ORRRR imagine playing tennis and you swing your phone around like a wii controller. All plausible.
2. Obviously the iPods and touch will get a refresh. Rumors says there will be a smaller nano with touch screen. Also new ipod touch with front facing camera and new form factor. I’m pretty sure facetime will be on the itouch as well.
3. Just being hopeful… new ios 4 for iPad and new ios update for the iPhone 4 to fix the proximity sensor. Please apple. Come on!!!!! Fix the proximity sensor damn it!
Tomorrow is the big day where Apple finally announces some new product(s). Many have said tablets, new iphone os 4.0, and possible announcements of iphone coming to verizon.
Here are my predictions for tomorrow:
- Apple will announce a new tablet. Not sure what the name would be called, my guess iTablet since slate is taken by hp.
- iTablet will be some variation of iphone os but I’m sure it’ll be PACKED with features iphone doesn’t have nor the power to do.
- iTablet will possibly have a always connected internet connection through a cellphone carrier probably through att.
- iPhone os 4.0 will be out for all iphone users.
- My final guess is a new touch! =)
So in the previous post, I wrote why I was jumping ship from the iphone.
I admit, the iphone is one the best phones that has ever been created. I’ve had an iphone since generation 1 and I loved it. It has it’s pluses but as geek, it’s limiting in flexibility.
The Android phone os by google has the edge when comes to flexibility. Android is a match made in heaven for software hackers. They can pretty much create any type of software they want, install whatever os they want, install any app they want, the list goes on. It’s an OPEN PLATFORM. Something Apple doesn’t like to do all that much with the iphone.
Here are just a few reasons why I like the Android better:
1. Android is an open platform. I can go download the source code right now off the website and make it my own by editing however I please.
2. I can install apps manually through my computer and sd card. I don’t have to use an app store that filters what I can and cannot download.
3. I can root my phone (hack and enable hidden features) and tether the phone, install modified versions of it’s os, download themes and so much more. Right now I’m using the Cyanogen mod, and it’s blazing faster than the stock Android. This is cool. Iphones, your stuck! you’re stuck to using Apples made phone os, and have to wait for features.
4. Android custom mods have the latest and greatest features Google is building for Android. Their updated almost daily.
5. Voice dial. Need I say more? Where is that Apple? This should be a standard in accessibility!!!
6. Multi-tasking. On the Android you can run multiple programs in the background, while iphone can run only ONE at a time.
7. Don’t like a feature on the phone such as the keyboard or phonebook? download a new one. You can replace a built in feature with a better one if you want. Iphone, they will veto any app that mimics any app that’s pre-built for the phone.
Ok, I tooted Androids horn. So what are the down falls of Android phones?
1. App store is not as nice and plentiful as apple app store.
2. Touch response is not as good as iphones. Iphones touch screen is phenomenally responsive.
3. Lacks multi-touch features iphone has. But with cyanogen’s mod, you can have it all.
4. No audible book compatibility. WTF? that sucks.
5. Memory? Android skimped out on the built in memory. But you can always buy an sd card and get way more. But I like built in memory.
6. Still no flash. Iphone doesn’t have flash either. I want to watch hulu on my phone damn it.
After 2 years of using an iphone (1st gen and 2nd gen), I’m happy say that I’ve left the iphone bandwagon. I’ve long adored the awesome phone created by Apple whom I love dearly. But after 2 years of the closed platform that Apple is running with their phones and app store, I’ve jumped ship for a more open platform, Android. So here is why I left the iPhone:
Apple is a big company. They are focused on making money. But to keep making money, they like to keep things closed. And especially with their iTunes and iPods. I think this is smart on their part but sucks for the end user. I want to be able to install whatever program I want on my phone and not be controlled by someone above me. It’s like having a nagging parent always hovering over you telling you what you can do and can’t. It sucks, and they need to stop. We as consumers should have the right to do whatever we please!
Android platform by google is going in the right direction. They give power to the user to take and run with what they created. It’s definitely not as polished as the iPhone or iTunes, but it’s getting there. Android phones will be a force to be noticed in due time.
Apple is slow to really making a good product even better. They do slow incremental updates on all their products. This is a business model to make more money, but I think it sucks to consumers. I want substantial updates when they only release a new model once or twice a year. I don’t care about no stupid compass, or any minor updates. I want better features, a better browser, a better mail app, etc.
Voice dial? WTF? where is it iPhone? This should be a STANDARD IN ALL PHONES for accessibility reasons. I know that the new 3G S iphones have it but that is so stupid I can’t even speak…
So there are my gripes and why I left the iphone. But I have my handful of gripes about the Android phones already. Custom Android ROMS here I come.
Well looks like Microsoft may have finally done something right. The video below shows off the new HD Zune player. The user interface (UI) looks amazingly smooth. The fluid flow the UI is outstanding. Something the iphone has just been lagging on. I’m sure the new iphone 3gs speeds up the process but the Zune HD looks amazingly smooth. Like butter! I’m hate to admit, but Microsoft, looks like you did a great job on this one.
I’m sorry but I have to say this cause it angers me. Kindle is a great product. Hands down the best current e-book out on the market. The newest version came out with a built in feature to read the ebooks to you whenever you didn’t feel like reading. So essentially your ebooks would become audiobooks. What amazing feature for the lazy, and most of all the sight impaired.
Because of dumb-bums like Authurs Guild whining about the copyright issues, the ebook reading out loud feature was crippled! What about the sight impaired people who want’s to read the book and their is no audio version? ever thought about that? Paper is dying format, and it should just die. It’s wasting trees, and creating trash which is further polluting the earth. Most of the books written today anyways is probably a shitty book anyways, so who gives a damn about your stupid copyright. Ok, I’m just ranting. Copyright is important but this audio feature thing on kindle is so stupid. What about computer? they can read any format you throw at it, even e-books… should we cripple our computers to? Should we rob the impaired of fairness and equality in life to enjoy already poorly written books?
Authors Guild, please… wake up and smell the technology. Move into the future and embrace the change and quit being greedy trying to squeeze every dime out of everyone.
I still love the kindle, but crippling this feature has now stopped me from purchasing one.
